Overview

The Best Picture winner at the 2016 Oscars is a searing and unforgettable account of the dogged determination of Boston Globe journalists as they strive to uncover allegations of child abuse within the Catholic Church.

Tom McCarthy’s (The Station Agent, Win Win) enthralling drama follows the painstaking efforts of the Spotlight unit, a small team of investigative journalists within the Globe that can spend years unravelling complex stories. The arrival of a new editor from outside Boston (Liev Schreiber) gives the team renewed impetus to tackle a story with explosive potential - particularly in a U.S. state where Catholicism is entrenched in every aspect of public life. Featuring superb performances from a fine ensemble cast (including Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams), Spotlight makes a powerful case for the continuing importance of the profession of journalism. As such it has been compared to the 1976 classic All the President’s Men – a film which shares Spotlight’s riveting procedural rigour.
