Simon Magus
Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones) stars as an outcast accused of sorcery by his fellow 19th-century villagers, in Ben Hopkins' rich and haunting allegory.
Drama 1999 115 mins
Director: Ben Hopkins
Overview
Noah Taylor, Embeth Davidtz, and Rutger Hauer star in Ben Hopkins' eerie and mysterious Simon Magus. A small Jewish village in 19th century Silesia has a railroad station, but no visitors. The town is lacking in funds, and crops are more scarce than ever. In order to blame someone for the whole ordeal, they turn to Simon Magus (Taylor), the village outsider who claims he can speak to the devil. Hopkins' film is a rich allegory dripping in haunting imagery, tense atmosphere, and eclectic performances.
The film was selected for the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival.
