Renishaw Flower Show and Gala Day

A day away from the grime and noise of the ironworks - Renishaw puts on its annual show.

The guest of honour at the 1951 Renishaw Gala Day is the 6th Baron Sitwell: Sir Osbert Sitwell (not 'Sir Oswald' as the titles of this locally produced film would have it). The local ironworks, which was established by the Sitwell family and the main employer in the town, looms large over the parade that begins the gala day. A lively stage show and the usual array of stalls provide the entertainment and an escape from the grind of work.

Sir Osbert lived in the family home at Renishaw Hall, which was built by George Sitwell in 1625. George made his money exploiting the area's rich reserves of iron ore.
