Overview

'Next time it’ll all be real, just like the movies'. There’s a tussle of ideas and styles at the heart of this ironic love letter to 1950s new wave cinema. It gently mocks the British ‘dramatic documentary’ tradition and its quotidian poetry but simultaneously suggests that the intellectualised referentiality of the French nouvelle vague probably doesn’t quite fit in a British context either. At the same time, Anne Basser’s film obliquely protests the lack of women’s creative voices in a 1970s film industry dominated by men.
