Scenes in the Scilly Isles

A picturesque look at the islands' cut flower industry

Travelogue 1912 3 mins Silent

Overview

What Jersey is to new potatoes, the Scillies are to daffodils. This picturesque film shows just how organised the cut flower business was in 1912. Charles Urban specialised in 'interest' films - short non-fiction subjects about people and places. They were produced to a high photographic standard and had a long shelf life in Britain's cinemas as well as internationally. This fine example, though incomplete, shows the lovely Scilly Isles with views of Hugh Town and St Agnes as well as the major occupation of the locals, daffodil farming.
