Overview

Enter a colourful world of delight as Co-operative treats are produced and packaged in the Shieldhall factory, Glasgow. Fruit is picked before being preserved and bottled, sauces are jarred, sugary sweeties are made and loaded into a van destined for toothless children, and bitter coffee is ground to fuel a nation with a growing thirst for caffeine. Well shot scenes accompanied by fascinating narration combine to provide an impression of working life behind the scenes.

This film came from The British Co-operative Movement Film Catalogue. It was produced in unison with another film, ‘Chemical Sundries Department’, which demonstrates processes like the production and packaging of salt, custard powder and bleach and the different methods of laboratory based product testing and quality control. A clip of this film is available to view on the Scottish Screen Archive’s website. Both films were sponsored by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society (SCWS) and were made as promotional films. They were produced by Gate Film Productions.
