Phillips Bicycles - Publicity Films for West Africa
From the West Midlands to West Africa: tour the Phillips bicycle plant in Smethwick and see the products in action overseas.
Overview
This intriguing pair of promos for Phillips Bicycles of Smethwick have sadly lost their soundtracks, but their key message - that Phillips is "Renowned the World Over" - is clear enough. The films demonstrate the bike's appeal in Africa and offer a wonderful colour study of cycle manufacture and assembly. At the time Phillips was Britain's second-largest bicycle producer, after Raleigh.
