Funeral Cortege Arriving at Trinity Pier

The Queen's coffin near the start of its long journey

1901 2 mins Silent

Overview

It's the morning of Saturday, 2 February 1901, and the late Queen's body has reached the end of the first leg of its long journey on the Isle of Wight. This film sees the coffin arrive at Trinity pier, East Cowes, where it is made ready for loading on to the Royal yacht Alberta before crossing the Solent to Portsmouth. This wonderfully well-preserved film shows a rather more intimate scene, with the crowds that lined much of the procession's route at a distance.

There are known to have been two films taken at this stage of the journey - one for the Warwick Trading Company and the other by William Kennedy-Laurie Dickson for the British Mutoscope and Biograph Company. This is likely Warwick's film.
