Overview

A portrait of a Yorkshire town during a typical WW2 fund raising week for Warships, providing an insight into the fund raising, and an intriguing peak into wartime daily life.

This is one of many fund raising weeks that took place during the Second World War to help buy armaments for the war effort. They usually focused on one particular kind of equipment, as with Wings for Victory, and took place throughout the country and at various times in the year after they were introduced by the government in 1941, along with War Savings Certificates. As well as raising money, they also served to bond the community together and boost morale. Many of them, as here, were filmed by amateur filmmakers.
