Cattle Market in Derry (1902)

Bustling scenes show Edwardian Derry-Londonderry before industrialisation took hold.

Non-Fiction 1902 2 mins Silent

Overview

These faded but poignant scenes of the weekly Rossville Street cattle market, filmed in March 1902 for a show at the city's Guildhall, present Derry as one of Edwardian Ireland's agricultural hubs. The city was less industrialised than Belfast at this time, a steady stream of equine traffic passes through Waterloo Place. Local children seem spellbound by the novel sight of a cinematograph camera.
