Overview

This hit New Zealand drama is a moving and entertaining account of a trans man's attempts to reconnect with his Māori roots and to rebuild the relationships he had left behind. Originally conceived as a 5-part web series, and presented here as a feature length film, this stirring drama centres on Caz, a trans man who hasn't been home in a decade. Worried that his family wouldn't have accepted his transition, he never came out before departing and hasn't kept in touch since. When he falls on hard times and ends up back in the small rural community of Rūrangi, nobody recognises him. Eventually, old flames rekindle and best friends begin to forgive. However, a stubborn streak runs in the family and for Caz's father trust doesn't come so easily. Fresh from winning Frameline's Audience Award, and with almost half the roles played by a gender diverse cast, Rūrangi is emotive, heart-warming queer storytelling at its best.

Originally screened at BFI Flare 2021 as part of the Hearts strand.
