In Andersen's 1835 story a tiny girl is born from a flower and has to evade courtship from a marriage-minded toad and mole before escaping to find safety with people like herself. The story invites any number of interpretations, from female empowerment to Freudian analysis. Thumbelina is one of a dozen films animator Lotte Reiniger made over a two-year period for television.
