Rose on Botham 1980

5 mins United Kingdom

Brian Rose talks to sports’ reporter Chris Fear about the possibility of the Marylebone Cricket Club selecting his team mate Ian Botham as captain of England. Botham or Beefy, as he was known, did become England captain in 1980 and 1981 but was sacked after England lost a series to the West Indies and after two Ashes Tests against the Australians. He remained an international cricketer until 1992 before becoming a cricket commentator.

Brian Rose played in nine Tests and two one-day international matches from 1977 to 1981. He was Ian Botham’s club captain at Somerset from 1978 until 1983 when Botham replaced him. He was a left-handed opening batsman who succeeded Brian Close as captain in 1978 and led Somerset to victory in the Gillette Cup and the John Player League in 1979. In 270 first-class matches he scored 13,236 with a career best of 205. He became the Director of Cricket at Taunton but stood down at the end of the 2012 season. He never captained England.

The South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA) is the regional film archive for the South West of England.
