Ropner & Co., Shipbuilders, Stockton-on-Tees 1900

3 mins United Kingdom

"Magnificent animated pictures [of] 10,000 Employees Leaving Stockton Shipyards," promised Mitchell and Kenyon in advance of this film's screening at Stockton-on-Tees' Exchange Hall in December 1900. The filmmakers sought to entice their audiences with the prospect of seeing themselves on screen, and so they tried to get as many people in shot as possible. But there may not be quite 10,000 here...

We know that Mitchell and Kenyon visited the North East several times in the early 1900s, including at least two trips to nearby Middlesbrough, but this is the only film we have from Stockton-on-Tees.
