Old England XI 1966

3 mins United Kingdom

England and Yorkshire fast bowler Fred Trueman played in his last Test match for England against New Zealand in 1965 but continued to play first class cricket for Yorkshire until 1968. Here he appears in an invitational England XI game with the South African-born Basil D’Oliveira with Somerset County Cricketers including Bill Alley.

The venue is unknown although on 7 September an England XI including Parfitt, Dexter and Boycott, Lewis, Parks, Higgs and Hobbs took on a Rest of the World XI in Scarborough. Although Trueman was no longer selected for England he helped Yorkshire to three consecutive County Championship wins to 1968. He remained a larger than life character and cricket commentator writing books and sitting on the board of Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Basil D’Oliveira had his Test debut on 16 June 1966 against the West Indies. In 1968 the England cricket selectors drop D’Oliveira from the team to tour South Africa because the apartheid regime under Vorster refuses to let him play. The tour is cancelled after his inclusion.

The South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA) is the regional film archive for the South West of England.
