Roberto Rossellini

One of the key figures in cinema history, Rossellini initiated a new movement and evolved the language of film.

The director may be remembered for his association with neo-realism, but his subsequent cinematic forays were no less innovative. The startling series of films he made with Ingrid Bergman, in which they reimagined the concept of the star performance, were a key progenitor for the personal and artistic cinema that swept Europe from the 1960s onwards.
